Message from Blair Campbell, Board President:  Hello everyone, it’s good to be back on the board after an unexpected six-month break. I appreciate everyone’s kind words and support for my family. Thanks especially to Peller Marion, who stepped in as acting board president so gracefully and selflessly, and who has now wrapped up her two most-recent terms of board service with the same intelligence and charisma that have distinguished her long tenure with O’Hanlon Center.

Thank you too to everyone who donated to our December Annual Fund Drive.  We earned $6835 in contributions, and your support is most appreciated!

We are also excited to present to you two new board member candidates:  Scott Adams and Kate Dumont.  Their election to the OHCA Board is contingent on your vote, so please cast your vote via email, mail, or hand delivery by Wednesday, January 23.

Scott Adams was raised in the Midwest, moved to San Francisco in 1972 and has lived in Marin County for the last 36 years. He has three children, two sons in New York City and a daughter with two grandchildren who live in Mill Valley. Like most artists, he designed and drew at a young age. He studied engineering and became an architect in 1975 working for large international firms. He designed his own home in Sleepy Hollow in 1988 and has proposed several projects in Marin including making 4th Street in San Rafael into a pedestrian street with a hotel.

In 1999 Scott took up oil painting and has taken several painting courses at College of Marin, and studied under Michael Markowitz in San Francisco. He focuses on color and prefers abstract paintings in oil although he also does representational art and other forms of art. His next art form will be abstract mobiles. He currently has several paintings in a small gallery in San Rafael. You can view his art at www.scottadamsartist.com.

Kathryn Dumont was born and raised on Long Island, New York in the country. Kate says, “Fantasy has imbued my life since I was a child and spent time talking with trees. Most adults in my world did not listen but the trees did and do. My closest connection to religion is an animism, that Spirit moves in all things in the world. Therefore, everything is a metaphor. The sun. moon, earth, water, people, and creatures are magical and speak in mysterious ways. I weave fables, myths, parables, fairy tales, Native American legends, and dreams into new stories and art that speak to and about what it means to be human. I joined O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in 2010 and enjoy the community of like-minded people, who allow an artist and writer space and time to find their authentic voice. I live in Sonoma, California with my cat, Serena, who is very wise and teaches me a great deal about life.”

The 2012 Annual OHCA Members’ Meeting offers a great opportunity to meet board members, hear about the Center’s accomplishments in 2012, and share our vision for what’s in store for 2013. The meeting is set for Saturday, January 26, 3 to 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.

O’Hanlon Center for the Arts invites artists to submit work for our February 2013 show “BOLD.”  Submitted work should explore bold use of color (i.e., emphasis is on color, not on bold subject matters).  Bring us your vibrant, splashy, joyous, rich-hued pieces.  Abstract and expressionistic works encouraged.

Media: Any media. Works must be ready to hang or display and must be labeled with artist’s name, title, phone, medium, size, and price, if for sale.

When you drop off your art please bring a resume or an artist statement if you have one.  We will give you information about Gallery policies at the time of drop off.  Gallery requirements are that insurance coverage is provided by the artist and that accepted work must remain on view for the duration of the exhibition.  By taking part in the show, artists agree to a 30% tax-deductible donation to the Center from all sales.

Dates for exhibition entries: Please hand-deliver (no slides or photos) up to three pieces of work to O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, 616 Throckmorton Avenue, Mill Valley, on Friday, February 1, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. or on Saturday, February 2, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. We will notify you (preferably by email) about whether your work has been accepted by Monday, February 4 at 4 p.m.

Any works not accepted must be picked up Tues., February 5 between 12:30 and 8 p.m., unless alternative arrangements are made.

Retrieval of Unsold Artwork: Unsold work must be picked up on Thurs., February 28 between 2 and 4 p.m., or on Friday, March 1, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Artists leaving their work after this time will be charged $5/day storage unless prior arrangements have been made.

February in the Loft Gallery: New Works by Kris Gordon Always varied, intriguing and experimental, Kris’ works reflect the spectrum of complexity and lightness encapsulated by her perception.  The Loft Gallery is adjacent to the O’Hanlon Center Gallery on the Center grounds.

Artist Opportunity:  The Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, California is seeking applications from artists for residencies in 2014. The Program offers residencies, at no cost, to artists in the disciplines of visual arts, media arts, music composition, choreography, and literature. Message from Peller Marion, Acting Board President: Dear Members, As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to thank you for all your support of O’Hanlon Center.  This year, we have continued to offer enticing themes for our juried Gallery shows, increased our membership, broadened programming, and brought Dick O’Hanlon’s Mobian sculpture back home.  We could not have done it without your financial and volunteer support.  We are looking to begin 2013 with renewed energy and enthusiasm and we have some exciting projects in the works such as restoring one of Dick O’Hanlon’s granite sculptures by the Gallery entrance and beginning our initial phases of our Master Plan development.

With that in mind, we ask you that when you consider your end-of-year contributions, please donate to O’Hanlon Center for the Arts.  We rely on your contributions to keep this organization vibrant.  You may send a check to the Center using the remit envelope sent to you with our recent Annual Fund card mailing, call the office to pay with a credit card over the phone, or use our new website to make your gift online:

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of long-time OHCA member Eileen Cassidy on December 13, 2012. Eileen was an inspiration to all artists, creating well into her 90s.  Her works were whimsical and fun, and revealed her youthful spirit.

Eileen was born in Madison, NY in 1913.  Her father was an army officer and she had three brothers and one sister.  She completed her undergraduate B.A. degree at U.C. Berkeley in 1935 and went on to pursue her Sociology Master’s degree at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.  Professionally, Eileen’s was a life of public service:  she ventured to Paris in 1946 with the Red Cross, worked for Catholic Services, was a State of California social worker, and spent 26 years at the San Francisco Veteran’s Administration Hospital, where she was head of the Social Work Department.  She retired in 1973.  Eileen loved to sing, especially ditties.  She will be greatly missed.  Call the OHCA office for details for her memorial arrangements.

Loft Stereo  Thank you to Victoria Bour and her partner David for replacing the Loft stereo system.  The old system was no longer working.  The new system has a CD player, IPod dock and has an AM/FM radio.  If anyone is interested in fixing the old system or taking one of its components, they are free to a good home; first come, first served.  They have been placed behind the partition wall in the Loft Library.  Also, the cassette tapes next to the old system are free for the taking.

Master Plan recommendations: OHCA is also seeking recommendations from you regarding the use of our buildings and the physical site in general. Ideas on what works well and what could work better will be considered for incorporation into our Master Plan. We want to hear from you! Please call or email the office with your suggestions.

Accessibility and Parking at OHCA  O’Hanlon’s Board and Master Plan Committee have been seeking to address ADA access on site.  In the near future, they will designate the entire carport as an ADA parking space.  The Loka resident’s space will be moved to the upper driveway, on the gravel.  Please do not park in the upper driveway and block their car.  Anyone needing to load/unload their cars using the upper driveway are welcome to, however, please make sure to move your car as soon as you are through.

OHCA Member News: Robert Gumpertz has completed two children’s books. The full color illustrations in “FRANKIE at the SEASHORE” and “FRANKIE at the BUS STOP” tell the story, no text. Both are for 3 to 6 year olds and are for sale on Amazon.com and at the Mill Valley Book Depot.

Enrique Goldenberg, Janet Greenwood, Katy Kuhn, Elaine Nehm, Cayen Robertson, and Joan Sadler have pieces in “Falkirk’s 100: 100 Artists, 100 Fine Works” holiday silent art auction. Reception and bidding are scheduled for Friday, December 14 from 5-8 p.m. (final bids are at 7 p.m.).  Falkirk Mansion, 1408 Mission Ave, San Rafael.
