Message from Blair Campbell, Board President:  Thank you to everyone who voted to approve Scott Adams and Kate Dumont to join OHCA’s Board.  We are very excited to have them.

 

We’d also like to announce Loft Clean Up Day on Wednesday March 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Please join OHCA staff and volunteers in a day of tidying our communal work space.  We need your help and input on how to maximize its usefulness!

 

Thanks too to those who attended the Annual Members’ Meeting on January 26.  Highlights of our 2012 Year in Review included:

WE CREATED AN ADVISORY COUNCIL: This Council consists of thoughtful community leaders who have made the decision to be volunteer advisors-as-needed to the OHCA Board of Directors and Staff.  The Advisory Council differs from the Board of Directors in that the Board is its legal, governing body.  An Advisory Council does not have formal legal responsibilities or liability for the organization. Advisory Council terms are for one year with an option for renewal.

To date, we have eight members on our Advisory Council: Alice Corning, Artist; Heidi Ducker, Bank of Marin; Hugh Olgivie, Rayner and Haynor; Stephanie Moulton-Peters, Council Member, City of Mill Valley; Susan Reid, Attorney; Ed Sattizahn, Vimala Sangha; Donna Seager, Seager-Gray Gallery; and Michael Tarnoff, Tarnoff Engineering Corporation.

WE CONTINUED OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS:

Gail Robertson stepped into the role of Board Treasurer in 2012.

OHCA is now enrolled in escrip, an online vehicle for donating.  Members can register any loyalty cards (Molly Stones, etc.) with escrip online and a portion of their receipts will be donated back to OHCA.

We worked with the Strawberry Pasta Pomodoro to schedule two dates last summer when supporters of OHCA brought in a flier with our information and a portion of their dining receipts was donated back to OHCA. This program earned us $62.10.

OHCA was deemed a recipient for the “Dimes for Non Profits” program at the Miller Ave. Whole Foods.  Through the program, when customers brought their bag while shopping, they were given the option to donate 10 cents to OHCA. The “Dimes for Non Profits” program earned us $943.40!

We are also a participant in Mill Valley Market’s “Shop and Give” program. They send donations to us quarterly based on 2% of sales designated to OHCA.  This year, they donated over $400 to OHCA.  Since we joined the program in 2005, they have donated $2,679 to OHCA!

WE FOCUSED ON OUR GALLERY SHOWS:  OHCA had eight shows in 2012 that earned more than $1000 in entry fees for OHCA:  January’s “2012 Annual Members’ Show” ($1100); February’s “Red” show ($1924); March’s “Fleurs” show ($1000); June’s “Wabi Sabi” show ($1580); July’s “Fathom” show ($1000); Augusts’ “Bay Area Women Artists” Show ($2970); September’s “Dreamscapes” show ($1350); December’s “Art of the Spirit” show ($1285).

In May 2012, OHCA hosted six artists exhibiting for Marin Open Studios.  Gail Robertson has been the point of contact for the show. Four of the six artists sold works during the 2012 weekend, and one of the others developed a relationship with an online retailer thru meeting at MOS and has subsequently sold through them.

OHCA sold four items from the February “Red” show; Kate Dumont sold her art pieces during her March Loft show; Gail sold one of her paintings from the April Loft show; one piece was sold from the Wabi Sabi show.  Cayen Robertson sold four pieces from her June Loft show; Barry sold a piece from July’s “Fathom” show; we sold two pieces during the Sept. “Dreamscapes” show; and Carolyn Planakis sold two piece in her October Loft show.

Sculptor Jhaya Warmington installed four of her pieces in the lower sculpture garden for much of 2012 and Julia Javrotsky now has her pieces on display.

ADDITIONALLY, WE ENHANCED OUR PROGRAMS

Writer’s Night Out in May had 40 people attend and brought in $140 in donations.

We hosted our first Artist Retreat the week of July 23-27, 2012 which was a hit with the participants.  They showed their resulting works in a Loft exhibit in November.  We just finished our second retreat in January and will offer another in July 2013.

We also offered our second year of the Local Women’s Writers Series in August; a performance by Margery Kreitman; and a production of the Vagina Monologues in September.

Approximately 75 percent of our scheduled classes were attended and enjoyed by members and the public in 2012.

WE DEVELOPED PARTNERSHIPS and COMMUNITY OUTREACH:  OHCA worked with GROW to create a partnership where referred participants can get a 15% discount at the other organization.

The Write On Mommas literary group has begun having their programs here at OHCA on a monthly basis and will continue to do so throughout 2013.

WE INCREASED OUR VISIBILITY:  OHCA launched its new Website in April!  The new site features online class registration and membership renewal capabilities, as well as an online donation function.

OHCA and the Mill Valley Art Commission organized an OHCA facilitator show at the Mill Valley Community Center, which was up in January 2013.

Megan Wilkinson joined a Community Arts Coalition with 142 Throckmorton, Marin Theater Company, and the MV Arts Commission to advocate for arts support in the City of Mill Valley’s 40 year plan.  Through that work, Megan was asked to participate on the City’s committee to develop their strategy and goals that will be incorporated in the plan.

Elaine James and Gail Robertson donated to buy OHCA a “Founder’s Pass” to the 142 Throckmorton Theater Mountain Film Fest.  As a Founder, OHCA’s name appeared on screen prior to each showing over the three day festival, and also appeared in the brochure for the film festival.

REFURBISHED AND INSTALLED MOBIAN:  With the help of our donors, sculptor John Libberton, and Bay Machine and Fabrication we brought Dick O’Hanlon’s Mobian sculpture back from Walnut Creek.  We will host an “Evening of Gratitude” this spring to thank all those whose contributions and efforts brought Mobian home.

2012 MASTER PLAN SUMMARY:  Michael Heacock began Chairing the Master Plan Cte.; Eldon Beck, Scott Adams, Mike Tarnoff, Barry Toranto, Gail Robertson, Abby Wasserman and Megan Wilkinson are also members of the Cte.

The Master Plan Cte. undertook a land survey of the entire site and Eldon drafted two proposals to address ADA access on site. The Cte. also began getting deck repair bids.

Michael Heacock met with city planners to begin discussions about revising our conditional use permit.

Scott, Gail, Abby and Megan surveyed program facilitators as to what their space needs are for the Loft and Gallery and what can be improved.  We are still looking for feedback in this area, so please let us know your thoughts.

Scott Adams has created as-built drawings of each of the buildings on site.  These crucial tools will be used to envision how our buildings may better serve program and gallery opportunities in the future.

LASTLY, WE INCREASED MEMBERSHIP: OHCA had 29 new members join in 2012 (for a total of 193 members).  New members last year were:

Sadly, we also lost three members last year: Suzanne Rogers passed away last February; Darlene Berg last fall; and most recently Eileen Cassidy.  All inspirational artists, and friends of many within our community, they will surely be missed.

 

CALL FOR ENTRIES “Darkness and Light”  O’Hanlon Center Gallery, March 2013

  • Exhibition Dates: March 5 through 28, 2013
  • Roundtable:  Tuesday, March 5, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Reception: Tuesday, March 5, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Juror:  Archana Horsting, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kala Art Institute, Berkeley
  • Entry Fee: $30 for OHCA members, $35 for non-members, for up to three pieces.

Submitted work can be composed of any colors (i.e. the show will not be limited to just black and white pieces) and should explore the relationship between these two oppositional elements. Abstract and expressionistic works encouraged.  Please do not submit works that have previously been displayed at the O’Hanlon Center Gallery.

Media: Any media. Outdoor installation proposals welcome.  All works must be ready to hang or display and must be labeled with artist’s name, phone, medium, size, and price, if for sale.

When you drop off your art please bring a resume or an artist statement if you have one.  We will give you information about Gallery policies at the time of drop off.  Gallery requirements are that insurance coverage is provided by the artist and that accepted work must remain on view for the duration of the exhibition.  By taking part in the show, artists agree to a 30% tax-deductible donation to the Center from all sales.

Dates for exhibition entries: Please hand-deliver (no slides or photos) up to three pieces of work to O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, 616 Throckmorton Avenue, Mill Valley, on Friday, March 1, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. or on Saturday, March 2, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. We will notify you (preferably by email) about whether your work has been accepted by Monday, March 4 at 4 p.m.

Those works not accepted must be picked up Tuesday, March 5 between 12:30 and 8 p.m., unless alternative arrangements are made.

Retrieval of Unsold Artwork: Unsold work must be picked up on Thursday, March 28 between 2 and 4 p.m., or on Friday, March 29, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Artists leaving their work after this time will be charged $5/day storage unless prior arrangements have been made.

March in the Loft Gallery: New Works by OHCA’s Personal Creativity Workshop Each week this class meets at the Center and explores themes related to the intuitive and abstract aesthetic nature dwelling within everyone. By concentration on process rather than technique they achieve a personal, unique visual expression that is often surprising and delightful.

Other Great Ways to Give OHCA has also enrolled in Escrip.com, an online resource for fundraising where participating businesses contribute a percentage of your grocery loyalty cards, credit card, and debit/ATM card purchases back to OHCA. Just register your existing cards for use in the program. Participating merchants will make contributions to OHCA based on your purchases, using the cards you have registered. OHCA Members in the News:  Congratulations to Deborah Fleisher on her “Mojo Exposed” show at the Depot Café in downtown Mill Valley!  Her paintings are on display through the end of February.
