Message from Michael Heacock, Board President:  Thank you to everyone who generously gave their time for the Loft Clean Up Day on February 26: Brooke Passano, Carolyn Planakis, Cayen Robertson, Eileen Worthley, Elaine James, Elaine Nehm, Gail Robertson, Judy Geiger, and Phyllis Pansegrau!  The space looks great.

A couple of items related to the Loft Clean Up Day:  Elaine and Carl Nehm have donated new glass table tops for the lower level studio, near the printing press.  Thank you, Nehms!  The glass pieces are fragile, so please treat with care. 

Also, the table top on the Loft’s uppermost floor is getting some wear-and-tear.  If you use this work space (on the same level as the Library and Kitchenette) please make sure to protect the table top from x-acto knives, scissors, pens, ink, paint, etc.  Please put down protective plastic or cardboard before setting up a project on that table.

In addition to that, OHCA would like to offer, free to a good home: two working stereo speakers: 41” high, 14 ¼” wide, and 10.5” deep; as well as a blue metal light exposure tray, good for making cyanotypes.  It measures 39” high, 39 ½” wide, and 33 ¾” deep.  First come, first served.  To arrange for picking up these items, please contact the OHCA office: 415-388-4331.

We are pleased to announce a special online donation opportunity on the O’Hanlon Center website currently:  Artist and O’Hanlon Center supporter Tom Robertson has generously agreed to donate 100% of the sales of six of his paintings to O’Hanlon Center for the Arts.  Each acrylic on canvas painting measures, in order of appearance in the online slideshow:

We are also sorry to share with you news of the passing of two beloved members of Marin’s art community:  Laurie Stoelting, haiku poet, Mt. Tam lover, and former O’Hanlon Center member, passed away Sunday, March 9.  A Memorial for Laurie is being planned for Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at the Homestead Valley Community Center. RSVP to Eric, Laurie’s husband, if you plan on attending the service: ericjs@sonic.net.

Max Thelen, art supporter and co-founder of Art Works Downtown in San Rafael passed away February 13, 2014.  Max was an attorney whose public service was also instrumental in building the foundation of the Marin Ballet Association nonprofit.  Max is survived by his wife, fiber artist Phyllis Thelen, who juried O’Hanlon Center’s Wabi Sabi show in 2010.

Both Laurie and Max gave so much to the arts in Marin.  They will be missed.

    Media: Watercolor. Must be ready to hang or display. All works should be labeled with artist’s name, telephone, medium, size, and price, if for sale.

    When you drop off your art please bring a resume or an artist statement if you have one.  We will give you information about Gallery policies at the time of drop off.  Gallery requirements are that insurance coverage is provided by the artist and that accepted work must remain on view for the duration of the exhibition.  By taking part in the show, artists agree to a 30% tax-deductible donation to the Center from all sales.

    Dates for exhibition entries: Please hand-deliver (no slides or photos) up to three pieces of work to O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, 616 Throckmorton Avenue, Mill Valley, on Friday, March 21, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. or on Saturday, March 22, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. We will notify you (preferably by email) about whether your work has been accepted by Monday, March 24 at 5 p.m.

    Those works not accepted must be picked up Tuesday, April 1 between 12:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., unless alternative arrangements are made.

Retrieval of Unsold Artwork: Unsold work must be picked up on Thursday, April 24 between 2 and 4 p.m., or on Friday, April 25, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Artists leaving their work after this time will be charged $5/day storage unless prior arrangements have been made.

April in the Loft Gallery:  Richard Cruwys Brown: “Re-Vision”  The O’Hanlon Center for the Arts’ Loft Gallery will present “Re-Vision: Reworked Art from the OHCA Donation Bin” works by Richard Cruwys Brown.  He says, “Artists can donate pieces to a bin in O’Hanlon Center’s Loft studio building which can be used by anyone who is interested exploring its contents and making changes as a creative exercise.  Sometimes the changes are subtle and at other times quite sweeping.  This show is a culmination of years of work out of the bin during the monthly monoprint class held at the Center and led by Cayen Robertson.”

An update about our deck replacement project: Engineering is underway with a permit to follow in March. We hope to begin foundation work in April. Please contact us today about opportunities to contribute to this exciting project!

Please Donate: Send us a monetary gift towards our physical site improvements!  The $50 or more you send will go towards projects like repainting the Gallery floor, washing windows, replacing heaters, improving lighting, shoring up retaining walls , helping bring Koya back to a functional ceramics studio, and OHCA’s deck repair. New program announcement:  An Afternoon of Irish Poetry in honor of St. Patrick’s Day will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Loft, $10, $8 OHCA members. 

A lively and lovely program of readings by Terry Phelan, a poet of Irish extraction living in San Rafael; Calvin Ahlgren of the Marin Poetry Center; Richard Cruwys Brown, a poet living in Kentfield; and Abby Wasserman, a Mill Valley writer. Besides their own work, the poets will read from the work of William Butler Yeats, Seamus Heaney, recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature; Eavan Boland, a poet born in Dublin who is presently professor of English at Stanford University; and Galway Kinnell, American poet who won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.  Work by other Irish poets, possibly including Tess Gallagher, Paul Muldoon, and James Joyce, will round out the program and Celtic harp player Susan T. Mashiyama, a singer/songwriter, will perform among the poems.  RSVP by March 12.

March in the Loft Gallery: “Vision and Form” by Jim Vogel. Jim says of his works, “Upon the realization that the relevance of a vision is subject to expectations of the viewer; I have found inspiration in the process of adapting my vision to a variety of forms. The paintings (1979- 2011) in this show represent ideas that had ‘legs’ in the visual world.”

Congratulations, too to Katy Kuhn!  Her painting “Woman” was on the cover of the Mill Valley Art Commission’s “First Tuesday Artwalk” Guide for February!  Katy’s paintings were also on display at Peristyle/Ruby Living on E. Blithedale during the course of February.

Artist Opportunities: Marin Artists Invited to Celebrate Creativity in Downtown San Rafael’s Street Banner Art Competition

Marin County artists inspired by the theme “Creative San Rafael” are invited to submit art work for the Downtown San Rafael Business Improvement District’s (BID) 2014 Streetscape Banner Art Competition. Selected entries will be featured along Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael this spring, with prizes awarded to juror-selected top three entries. Additionally, the BID will host a “people’s choice” award, inviting the community to vote for favorite designs of all entries displayed in a Facebook photo gallery. The Call for Entries and entry guidelines are online: www.srbid.org. Deadline is March 30.

Call for Applications:  Djerassi Resident Artists Program  The Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, California is seeking applications from artists for residencies in 2015. The Program offers residencies, at no cost, to artists in the disciplines of visual arts, media arts, music composition, choreography, and literature. Artists selected by peer panels are offered room, board, and studio space for 6, 30-day sessions during the season, which runs from mid-April through mid-November.

The deadline for accepting applications is March 15th, 2014, for a residency in 2015. Artists may apply through the APPLY link on our website www.djerassi.org or through the online portal www.djerassi.slideroom.com. Please note: the Djerassi Program is no longer accepting paper applications.
