September 2008
October in the O’Hanlon Gallery: SUMMeR DaYS: Paintings by Marie Van Elder On Tuesday, October 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., O’Hanlon Center for the Arts will present an Open House and Reception for October’s show “SUMMeR DaYS,” a one woman show by Mill Valley-based painter Marie Van Elder. The show runs through October 30, 2008.
Several large oil paintings (up to 6x7 feet) in the show “SUMMeR DaYS” feature heroic-sized teenage girls engaged in what seems to be ordinary summer outdoor activities. However, the artist endows them with a curious enigmatic otherness and almost mythological significance, making the paintings oscillate between kitschy girly fantasy and sexual innuendoes and isolating the subjects in a world on their own, one that responds to their own culture and hidden rituals.
With an undertone of longing and apprehension, the paintings hint on the invisible dark corners of human nature and often reference traditional European paintings.
The gallery exhibit will include a series of intimate, fast and fluid gouaches and collages on paper.
Marie Van Elder was born in Belgium, received a Master of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts and lives and works in Mill Valley with her two teenage daughters.
October in the Loft Gallery: “One of a Kind: Works from O’Hanlon’s Monthly Monoprinting Class” This group show represents a year’s worth of explorations with monoprinting, single-run prints on paper. The class is held the first Sunday of each month at O’Hanlon Center and is co-taught by Karen Cox and Cayen Robertson.
Facilitator Karen Cox was introduced to monoprinting 30 years ago by Ann O’Hanlon and has been working in the medium ever since. She is an artist who lives in Westley, California, with her husband Bill, a farmer.
Cayen Robertson is an artist and O’Hanlon Center workshop facilitator who studied with Ann O’Hanlon from 1975 to 1990. She celebrated her 20th year of teaching here in May 2004. She is also a working painter, sculptor and assemblage artist who has taught Visual Perception in Marin County schools and traveled extensively in Europe, studying art in private and public collections.
O’Hanlon Center in the News: The Loka Retreat Center was featured in the “Currents” section of Marin Magazine’s September 2008 edition. Turn to page 40 for a picture of the Center and information on OHCA’s latest venture. Many thanks to Abby Wasserman for working with Marin Magazine to publish the details.
As always, the Center is also included in Marin Magazine’s “Galleries” segment of the Arts and Events section. Look for our show announcements each month to see what’s coming up next in the O’Hanlon Gallery.
Diorama Delivery Reminder: O’Hanlon Center offers two ways of receiving your Diorama Newsletter. You may now choose to have your Diorama delivered electronically, to your email inbox. A benefit of using email is not only reducing the paper stream, but receiving your Diorama the day it goes to press. If you are interested in this option, please call or email the office to let Megan know, otherwise we will continue to send the newsletter in hardcopy.
We Thank Our Donors! O’Hanlon recently received generous contributions from Anthony Lawlor and Peller Marion.
There are many ways in which you can donate to O’Hanlon Center. Anthony Lawlor gives 100% of the proceeds from his lecture series each month to the Center and Peller Marion donated recently through the sale of her artwork. She also gave the remaining percentage to the Grace Dammann Fund, earning over $400 toward Grace’s care. You can even donate while you shop: while at the Mill Valley Market check stand, mention our number, 7078, and three percent of your purchases will be donated to OHCA. Soon you will be receiving an O’H annual fund solicitation in the mail. We ask that you respond as generously as you can, and if you cannot donate financially at this time, think of other ways in which you can participate at the Center.
