Diorama masthead

June 2009

Message from Michael Tarnoff, Board President:  Dear Members, donations continue to arrive towards Mobian!  As of May 26, we’ve received $1,885, and a pledge for another $1,000.  Thank you all for your donations!  If you’ve not already given, please consider making a donation to help us meet our goal of $5,000.  Checks, cash, or credit cards are welcome.

The Board will be making many cost cutting measures to the annual budget in order to reduce our continual annual losses.  We have not formulated the final budget, but in these tight economic times, we want to act responsibly.  We’ll do our best to manage benefits and costs.

New Board Member Nominees:  The Board is proud to announce board member nominees Gregory Edwards and Kathleen Nemetz.  The attached ballot has their biographies.  The Board is excited about what each of these nominees will bring to O’Hanlon Center, and recommend that the membership make a yes vote for each.  Please use the attached ballot and return your vote to OHCA no later than Friday, June 3.  You may also email the office with your decision.

Upcoming Changes:  In order to reduce OHCA’s significant printing expenses and paper stream, the Center will be sending out its last printed Diorama this month to those current members who have email.  Those without email will still receive a hardcopy in the mail and there are always copies available in the Loft.  If you do have email but still wish to receive a mailed version, please contact the office.  We will also be sending out one last program guide to our entire mailing list.  In the future, our program information will be sent only to our members, but may always be accessed via our website.

Volunteer Services:  Thank you to new Board member Kelly Horner for trenching along Loka’s upper path and for installing its timed lights.  The path looks great!

Abby Wasserman delivered a wonderful talk and slide show to an Outdoor Art Club luncheon May 14.  Abby interspersed her talk with slide photos she compiled from Ann O’Hanlon’s lectures and complimented it with music by Lew Richmond.

Are you a professional accountant or bookkeeper?  Donate your time and expertise to O’Hanlon.  Please contact the office if you are available or have a suggestion of someone who could help.

OHCA Online:  Become a fan of OHCA and the Loka Retreat Center on Facebook or Linkedin!  Also, if you don’t have a website of your own artwork, create an album on the OHCA Facebook page.  Just send us 5 jpegs and we’ll add them to the site.  If you do have your own website, send us the link so we can add it to the ohanloncenter.org page.

CALL FOR ENTRIES:

“Works with Paper,” July 2009

Media:  Paper must be the core element of submitted work - its texture, touch, and color, whether folded, molded, painted, torn, or otherwise altered to create the finished piece. This show will feature paper as a medium, NOT works using paper as a background support.  Exploratory and experimental entries encouraged.

Eligibility: Open to all artists aged 18 and over. By taking part in the show, artists agree to a 30% tax-deductible donation to the Center from all sales.

Juror: Abstract collage artist Louise Forbush has been making, collecting, and manipulating paper for the last 15 years. She is represented by galleries in Berkeley and Petaluma, has participated in many solo and group shows, and for the last 5 years has been the curator of monthly art shows at the Thomson Hall Gallery in Sausalito.

Submittal requirements:
Number: Hand-deliver up to 3 pieces per person (no slides or photos).

Labeling: Each piece must be labeled with artist's name, telephone, email, medium, size, and price (if for sale). Please include a bio/artist's statement with your entries.

Ready for hanging: Make sure pieces are ready to display, with wires or other proper hanging material and instructions, if necessary.

Delivery deadline: Hand-deliver entries on Fri., June 26, 11a.m. to 4:00p.m. or Sat., June 27, 11a.m. to 1:00p.m. to: O'Hanlon Center, 616 Throckmorton Ave. Mill Valley.

Notification:  We will notify you (preferably by email) by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 6 about whether your work has been accepted.

Non-accepted work: Pick up non-accepted work by Tuesday, July 7 from noon to 8:00 p.m., unless you have made alternative arrangements.

Non-sold work: Pick up unsold work on Thursday, July 30 from 2p.m. to 4:30 p.m. or on Friday, July 31 from 11a.m. to 4:00 p.m. After this time, artists will be charged $5/day storage unless you've made prior arrangements.
