Shaping Space with Flax Fiber w/ JACQUELINE MALLEGNI
August 27 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
We are excited to host Jacqueline’s first ever OHCA workshop.
Learn to transform flax fiber into beautiful textured paper, then shape space creating an ethereal sculpture. This fiber paper can also be used for book arts, dying and painting techniques. The possibilities are endless! No-experience with papermaking or sculpture necessary. The class is really designed to help people overcome their inner-critic and to have fun.
$130, $104 OHCA members, $25 materials fee
My work is ethereal in nature inspired by Asian aesthetics and philosophies of wabi-sabi (acceptance of transience and imperfection) and yugen (deep awareness). Many years spent collecting dye plant materials for loom weaving and basketry easily translated into using some of the same materials adding color and texture to handmade paper. The ancient art of papermaking, for me the process of weaving with water, fiber and a screen, has been the thread of my artistic process for over two decades.
I create mixed media minimalist sculpture with a focus on the concept of ‘the spaces between’ exploring the perception of a landscape. What is it we, as humans, choose to see. The spaces between us and them, inside/outside. The space between contemplation and chaos. The sculptures I create are small installations made with natural materials, handmade paper, cast flax roving, embellished with mono-prints infused with sumi ink. The intention is to evoke a sense of place and one’s relationship to that place. To pause and reflect on the beauty within.
