Daily, there was a sense of bewilderment, grief and pain. What emerged was a year-long journey making three dimensional mandalas and photographing them. The photographs came to represent a journey of loss and resurrection. They started mysteriously illustrating a soul that bears fruit when the outward world was dry and confusing. Mandalas have the energy to radiate the mystery of the invisible heart: the heart of a Mother that says ‘this is the way home, you are home. All is good’.” The Loft Gallery is adjacent to the O’Hanlon Center Gallery on the Center grounds.

Message from Blair Campbell, Board President:

Spring is here and is in full glory at O’Hanlon Center! We have news about some exciting projects I wanted to share with you. You may have noticed that we have begun restoring one of Dick O’Hanlon’s granite sculptures by the Gallery entrance. This work is being completed by Johana Krantz-Moreno, a professional conservator referred to OHCA by the Oakland Museum of California. The work will take $1200 to be completed. So far, we have raised $660. Please consider donating to this special project. You may use our website for an online gift:

http://ohanloncenter.org/donate/ or you may call the office with your credit card number.

We also have completed the schedule for OHCA’s April-June quarter of classes. You should have received your program postcard in the mail already. There is a wonderful lineup of visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, and meditative arts offerings, as well as special family programming. Join us! Look online for complete program details: www.ohanloncenter.org

Website Links and Facebook Thank you to Jeremy Thornton for adding more images to the OHCA website! It looks great. Remember, if you are an OHCA member with a website, please send us the link and we will add it to our “Meet the Members” page. Also, if you have arts-related news that you’d like to share, send us the info! We’ll add it to our Diorama Newsletter as well as post the items on our Facebook page. By the way, if you haven’t already done so, please “Like” O’Hanlon Center for the Arts’ on Facebook so you can follow all our updates.

Thank You to Volunteers Judy Geiger, Phyllis Pansegrau, Brooke Passano, Carolyn Planakis, Cayen Robertson, and Eileen Worthley for helping tidy the Loft on Clean Up Day March 13. The space looks amazing! Clean Up Days are scheduled once or twice a year, but if you use the space for classes or during studio drop in time, please take a moment to make sure the space is in the same condition or better as when you found it.

Thank you too, to Scott Adams, Bob Breen, Blair Campbell, Melinda DiSessa, Michael Heacock, Esther Munger, Gail Robertson and Abby Wasserman for organizing a lovely gratitude event for donors who helped bring Mobian back to OHCA.

April in the Loft Gallery: “The Great Ocean,” by Eloise Larson. Painter and writer Eloise Larson will exhibit her series “The Great Ocean,” which consists of oil paintings and poems written in the ancient Indian gatha form. The work is based on her daily life and practice as a Buddhist. Larson seeks immediate marks, dripping, running and layering the paint in black and white non-representational expressions. Writing furthers this contemplation and allows the viewer to listen to her life’s meditations as well as see them. Eloise says, “Contemplating conditions, I write gathas. Concentrating my focus, I paint. I often cross the line and delineate the ‘idea’ of a gatha or a painting. Upon seeing what my mind is up to, I open my grasp and let go. The work is a record of this practice.”

We Thank Our Donors! O’Hanlon recently received tax-deductible gifts from the Eileen Cassidy Trust, Margery Kreitman, Esther Munger, OHCA’s Personal Creativity Workshop Participants, Gary Scheuenstuhl and Mill Valley Music, and Abby Wasserman and Potter Wickware.

Message from Blair Campbell, Board President: Thank you to everyone who voted to approve Scott Adams and Kate Dumont to join OHCA’s Board. We are very excited to have them.

We’d also like to announce Loft Clean Up Day on Wednesday March 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please join OHCA staff and volunteers in a day of tidying our communal work space. We need your help and input on how to maximize its usefulness!

Thanks too to those who attended the Annual Members’ Meeting on January 26. Highlights of our 2012 Year in Review included:

WE CREATED AN ADVISORY COUNCIL: This Council consists of thoughtful community leaders who have made the decision to be volunteer advisors-as-needed to the OHCA Board of Directors and Staff. The Advisory Council differs from the Board of Directors in that the Board is its legal, governing body. An Advisory Council does not have formal legal responsibilities or liability for the organization. Advisory Council terms are for one year with an option for renewal.

To date, we have eight members on our Advisory Council: Alice Corning, Artist; Heidi Ducker, Bank of Marin; Hugh Olgivie, Rayner and Haynor; Stephanie Moulton-Peters, Council Member, City of Mill Valley; Susan Reid, Attorney; Ed Sattizahn, Vimala Sangha; Donna Seager, Seager-Gray Gallery; and Michael Tarnoff, Tarnoff Engineering Corporation.

WE CONTINUED OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS:

Gail Robertson stepped into the role of Board Treasurer in 2012.

OHCA is now enrolled in escrip, an online vehicle for donating. Members can register any loyalty cards (Molly Stones, etc.) with escrip online and a portion of their receipts will be donated back to OHCA.

We worked with the Strawberry Pasta Pomodoro to schedule two dates last summer when supporters of OHCA brought in a flier with our information and a portion of their dining receipts was donated back to OHCA. This program earned us $62.10.

OHCA was deemed a recipient for the “Dimes for Non Profits” program at the Miller Ave. Whole Foods. Through the program, when customers brought their bag while shopping, they were given the option to donate 10 cents to OHCA. The “Dimes for Non Profits” program earned us $943.40!

We are also a participant in Mill Valley Market’s “Shop and Give” program. They send donations to us quarterly based on 2% of sales designated to OHCA. This year, they donated over $400 to OHCA. Since we joined the program in 2005, they have donated $2,679 to OHCA!

WE FOCUSED ON OUR GALLERY SHOWS: OHCA had eight shows in 2012 that earned more than $1000 in entry fees for OHCA: January’s “2012 Annual Members’ Show” ($1100); February’s “Red” show ($1924); March’s “Fleurs” show ($1000); June’s “Wabi Sabi” show ($1580); July’s “Fathom” show ($1000); Augusts’ “Bay Area Women Artists” Show ($2970); September’s “Dreamscapes” show ($1350); December’s “Art of the Spirit” show ($1285).

In May 2012, OHCA hosted six artists exhibiting for Marin Open Studios. Gail Robertson has been the point of contact for the show. Four of the six artists sold works during the 2012 weekend, and one of the others developed a relationship with an online retailer thru meeting at MOS and has subsequently sold through them.

OHCA sold four items from the February “Red” show; Kate Dumont sold her art pieces during her March Loft show; Gail sold one of her paintings from the April Loft show; one piece was sold from the Wabi Sabi show. Cayen Robertson sold four pieces from her June Loft show; Barry sold a piece from July’s “Fathom” show; we sold two pieces during the Sept. “Dreamscapes” show; and Carolyn Planakis sold two piece in her October Loft show.

Sculptor Jhaya Warmington installed four of her pieces in the lower sculpture garden for much of 2012 and Julia Javrotsky now has her pieces on display.

ADDITIONALLY, WE ENHANCED OUR PROGRAMS

Writer’s Night Out in May had 40 people attend and brought in $140 in donations.

We hosted our first Artist Retreat the week of July 23-27, 2012 which was a hit with the participants. They showed their resulting works in a Loft exhibit in November. We just finished our second retreat in January and will offer another in July 2013.

We also offered our second year of the Local Women’s Writers Series in August; a performance by Margery Kreitman; and a production of the Vagina Monologues in September.

Approximately 75 percent of our scheduled classes were attended and enjoyed by members and the public in 2012.

WE DEVELOPED PARTNERSHIPS and COMMUNITY OUTREACH: OHCA worked with GROW to create a partnership where referred participants can get a 15% discount at the other organization.

The Write On Mommas literary group has begun having their programs here at OHCA on a monthly basis and will continue to do so throughout 2013.

WE INCREASED OUR VISIBILITY: OHCA launched its new Website in April! The new site features online class registration and membership renewal capabilities, as well as an online donation function.

We have begun using the Mail Chimp email marketing service to send out our program and gallery updates. If you have not already done so, please use this link: http://eepurl.com/hiW1M to receive our e-blasts.

OHCA and the Mill Valley Art Commission organized an OHCA facilitator show at the Mill Valley Community Center, which was up in January 2013.

Megan Wilkinson joined a Community Arts Coalition with 142 Throckmorton, Marin Theater Company, and the MV Arts Commission to advocate for arts support in the City of Mill Valley’s 40 year plan. Through that work, Megan was asked to participate on the City’s committee to develop their strategy and goals that will be incorporated in the plan.

Elaine James and Gail Robertson donated to buy OHCA a “Founder’s Pass” to the 142 Throckmorton Theater Mountain Film Fest. As a Founder, OHCA’s name appeared on screen prior to each showing over the three day festival, and also appeared in the brochure for the film festival.

REFURBISHED AND INSTALLED MOBIAN: With the help of our donors, sculptor John Libberton, and Bay Machine and Fabrication we brought Dick O’Hanlon’s Mobian sculpture back from Walnut Creek. We will host an “Evening of Gratitude” this spring to thank all those whose contributions and efforts brought Mobian home.

2012 MASTER PLAN SUMMARY: Michael Heacock began Chairing the Master Plan Cte.; Eldon Beck, Scott Adams, Mike Tarnoff, Barry Toranto, Gail Robertson, Abby Wasserman and Megan Wilkinson are also members of the Cte.

The Master Plan Cte. undertook a land survey of the entire site and Eldon drafted two proposals to address ADA access on site. The Cte. also began getting deck repair bids.

Michael Heacock met with city planners to begin discussions about revising our conditional use permit.

Scott, Gail, Abby and Megan surveyed program facilitators as to what their space needs are for the Loft and Gallery and what can be improved. We are still looking for feedback in this area, so please let us know your thoughts.

Scott Adams has created as-built drawings of each of the buildings on site. These crucial tools will be used to envision how our buildings may better serve program and gallery opportunities in the future.

LASTLY, WE INCREASED MEMBERSHIP: OHCA had 29 new members join in 2012 (for a total of 193 members). New members last year were:

Angie Azur, Carol Baum, Marsha Connell, Jane Cornwell, Mary D’Auray, Joyce and John Feeney, Duane Fitzgerald, Megan Franzen, Jenny Hynes, Gina Jacupke, Tracey Kessler, Elaine Larson, Jonathan Livingston, Candace Maddux, Denise Meehan, Esther Munger, Jerry Pruce, Virginia Rigney, Julia Ross, Tachina Rudman-Young, Dana Scofield, Tom Silver, Ellen Singer Vine, Else Tamayo, Tabitha Warren, Victoria Woo, David Zeltser, and Ellen Zucker.

Sadly, we also lost three members last year: Suzanne Rogers passed away last February; Darlene Berg last fall; and most recently Eileen Cassidy. All inspirational artists, and friends of many within our community, they will surely be missed.

Message from Blair Campbell, Board President: Hello everyone, it’s good to be back on the board after an unexpected six-month break. I appreciate everyone’s kind words and support for my family. Thanks especially to Peller Marion, who stepped in as acting board president so gracefully and selflessly, and who has now wrapped up her two most-recent terms of board service with the same intelligence and charisma that have distinguished her long tenure with O’Hanlon Center.

Thank you too to everyone who donated to our December Annual Fund Drive. We earned $6835 in contributions, and your support is most appreciated!

We are also excited to present to you two new board member candidates: Scott Adams and Kate Dumont. Their election to the OHCA Board is contingent on your vote, so please cast your vote via email, mail, or hand delivery by Wednesday, January 23.

Scott Adams was raised in the Midwest, moved to San Francisco in 1972 and has lived in Marin County for the last 36 years. He has three children, two sons in New York City and a daughter with two grandchildren who live in Mill Valley. Like most artists, he designed and drew at a young age. He studied engineering and became an architect in 1975 working for large international firms. He designed his own home in Sleepy Hollow in 1988 and has proposed several projects in Marin including making 4th Street in San Rafael into a pedestrian street with a hotel.

In 1999 Scott took up oil painting and has taken several painting courses at College of Marin, and studied under Michael Markowitz in San Francisco. He focuses on color and prefers abstract paintings in oil although he also does representational art and other forms of art. His next art form will be abstract mobiles. He currently has several paintings in a small gallery in San Rafael. You can view his art at www.scottadamsartist.com.

Kathryn Dumont was born and raised on Long Island, New York in the country. Kate says, “Fantasy has imbued my life since I was a child and spent time talking with trees. Most adults in my world did not listen but the trees did and do. My closest connection to religion is an animism, that Spirit moves in all things in the world. Therefore, everything is a metaphor. The sun. moon, earth, water, people, and creatures are magical and speak in mysterious ways. I weave fables, myths, parables, fairy tales, Native American legends, and dreams into new stories and art that speak to and about what it means to be human. I joined O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in 2010 and enjoy the community of like-minded people, who allow an artist and writer space and time to find their authentic voice. I live in Sonoma, California with my cat, Serena, who is very wise and teaches me a great deal about life.”

The 2012 Annual OHCA Members’ Meeting offers a great opportunity to meet board members, hear about the Center’s accomplishments in 2012, and share our vision for what’s in store for 2013. The meeting is set for Saturday, January 26, 3 to 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.

Marin Open Studios at OHCA: We still have space available in the gallery or on the grounds; for members and non-members; prices range from $40 to $240 for more information, email Gail Robertson at gailytr@aol.com

Message from Peller Marion, Acting Board President: Dear Members, As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to thank you for all your support of O’Hanlon Center. This year, we have continued to offer enticing themes for our juried Gallery shows, increased our membership, broadened programming, and brought Dick O’Hanlon’s Mobian sculpture back home. We could not have done it without your financial and volunteer support. We are looking to begin 2013 with renewed energy and enthusiasm and we have some exciting projects in the works such as restoring one of Dick O’Hanlon’s granite sculptures by the Gallery entrance and beginning our initial phases of our Master Plan development.

With that in mind, we ask you that when you consider your end-of-year contributions, please donate to O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. We rely on your contributions to keep this organization vibrant. You may send a check to the Center using the remit envelope sent to you with our recent Annual Fund card mailing, call the office to pay with a credit card over the phone, or use our new website to make your gift online:

http://ohanloncenter.org/donate/

O’Hanlon Center also accepts gifts of stocks. End-of-year donations of stocks are eligible for fair market value income deductions and avoid capital gains taxes. With an up market now, and with tax laws subject to change in 2013, these are good options for those wishing to to give O’Hanlon Center.

Remember, memberships and classes also make great holiday gifts! Share the joy you’ve discovered at O’Hanlon with your friends.

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of long-time OHCA member Eileen Cassidy on December 13, 2012. Eileen was an inspiration to all artists, creating well into her 90s. Her works were whimsical and fun, and revealed her youthful spirit.

Eileen was born in Madison, NY in 1913. Her father was an army officer and she had three brothers and one sister. She completed her undergraduate B.A. degree at U.C. Berkeley in 1935 and went on to pursue her Sociology Master’s degree at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Professionally, Eileen’s was a life of public service: she ventured to Paris in 1946 with the Red Cross, worked for Catholic Services, was a State of California social worker, and spent 26 years at the San Francisco Veteran’s Administration Hospital, where she was head of the Social Work Department. She retired in 1973. Eileen loved to sing, especially ditties. She will be greatly missed. Call the OHCA office for details for her memorial arrangements.

Loft Stereo Thank you to Victoria Bour and her partner David for replacing the Loft stereo system. The old system was no longer working. The new system has a CD player, IPod dock and has an AM/FM radio. If anyone is interested in fixing the old system or taking one of its components, they are free to a good home; first come, first served. They have been placed behind the partition wall in the Loft Library. Also, the cassette tapes next to the old system are free for the taking.

Master Plan recommendations: OHCA is also seeking recommendations from you regarding the use of our buildings and the physical site in general. Ideas on what works well and what could work better will be considered for incorporation into our Master Plan. We want to hear from you! Please call or email the office with your suggestions.

Accessibility and Parking at OHCA O’Hanlon’s Board and Master Plan Committee have been seeking to address ADA access on site. In the near future, they will designate the entire carport as an ADA parking space. The Loka resident’s space will be moved to the upper driveway, on the gravel. Please do not park in the upper driveway and block their car. Anyone needing to load/unload their cars using the upper driveway are welcome to, however, please make sure to move your car as soon as you are through.

Become an OHCA Board Member! Interested in helping shape O’Hanlon’s future? We need you! Contact the office if you’d like to learn more about being on OHCA’s volunteer Board.

Mail Chimp In 2013, Diorama will be delivered only to our MailChimp subscribers. MailChimp is a great tool that protects privacy and enables program registration online.
October in the O’Hanlon Gallery: “Marge Rector: The Free Flow Series” If you are a fan of classic, authentic modernism, you will have an opportunity to view a robust exhibit of paintings by Marge Rector, a Sausalito-based artist at O’Hanlon Center for the Arts in Mill Valley. Marge is hot right now. At 80 something, she has been in several gallery exhibits in the last year and won three juried shows from Pasadena to New York. Creating and painting 4 hours a day, she has produced an admirable collection of art that has an almost OP Art effect on the admiring retina. Her Free Flow Series will be the highlight at O’Hanlon Center. This diverse collection displays the artist’s fervor for abstract expressionism; think Diebenkorn, de Kooning and Picasso combined with the disciplined simplicity of Agnes Martin.

Marge Rector trained originally at Texas Tech University in graphic arts. Once she abstracted her art, there was no going back. Her Free Flow Series at O’Hanlon will show the observer an artist whose creative flux is still in motion. To see the breadth of her work, go to www.margerectorart.com.

Also on Exhibit: “Focus on Perception” by Carolyn Planakis Also throughout October, O’Hanlon’s Loft Gallery will feature new works by Carolyn Planakis. Carolyn says, “The works on paper and paintings in this exhibit have been created at the O’Hanlon Center in the past two years. They are a very personal statement of my involvement with Art Perception workshops for over 40 years. Seeing so many of my works together in this special environment reinforces my feeling about the importance of PROCESS, which is always continuing…. I am excited to share mine with you.”

We Thank Our Donors! O’Hanlon recently received tax-deductible gifts from Sonja Bakalyar, Ann Fricker, Mill Valley Market, Jessica O’Dwyer, Cayen Robertson, Dorothy Salant, and Virginia Stella.

Mention “7078” at Mill Valley Market’s register and 2% of your sales will be donated to OHCA!

Message from Blair Campbell, Board President: In an effort to address our organization’s serious ongoing budget shortfall and our concern for O’Hanlon Center’s financial future, the Board has voted in favor of a small but meaningful increase in Use, Studio, and Gallery Entry Fees. The Loft phone will also be disconnected at this time. We arrived at the decision to increase fees after months of deliberation, and we have taken care to do so in the way we hope will be most manageable for our membership. We have not raised membership fees at this time. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Starting immediately, new Use Fees (for private events at our facilities) will be:

Non-Profits – $30/hour

Commercial (any event charging admission-profit or non-profit) $45/hour

Media: Any media. Outdoor installation proposals welcome. Works must be ready to hang or display and labeled with artist’s name, phone, medium, size, and price, if for sale.

When dropping off your art, please bring a resume or an artist statement if you have one. Gallery policies will be provided at the time of drop off. Gallery requirements are that insurance coverage is provided by the artist and that accepted work must remain on view throughout the month. By taking part in the show, artists agree to a 30% tax-deductible donation to OHCA from all sales.

Dates for exhibition entries: Please hand-deliver (no slides or .jpgs) up to three pieces of work to OHCA on Friday, June 29, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. or on Saturday, June 30, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. We will notify you (preferably by email) about whether your work has been accepted by Monday, July 2 at 5 p.m. Works not accepted must be picked up Tuesday, July 3, between 12:30 and 8 p.m., unless alternative arrangements are made.

Also on Exhibit: Virginia Stella, “Of Heaven and Earth” Virginia says, “I am an artist of earth and sky, using drawing, photography and printmaking mediums. The garden is a fertile place of color, light, form, and texture that affords me plant material for working in my studio. I also work plein air, hoping to discover a new shell, feather, or church around the bend. A trip to Sicily, my ancestral home, heightened my appreciation for creativity and Creators. ‘Make something beautiful for God’ said Mother Teresa. I hope my work fulfills that suggestion and that earthly viewers enjoy my work as well.”

Also on Exhibit during June: “Cayen Robertson: One by One” These new works are a poetic/musical way of visualizing the culture and connectedness of the world we live in. Each work which she calls “composites” are, as a whole, made up of distinct equally sized segments. Each segment has its own rhythm, mood, scale and event. Together the segments join forces and become visual poems or modern musical compositions where harmony, dissonance, feeling and emotion meet.
