Class Overview:
Unleash your creativity in this two-day workshop for artists and creative explorers of all levels. In this class, you’ll transform a blank sketchbook into a dynamic and personal creative journal. By combining mixed media techniques with unconventional materials and guided prompts from the instructors, you’ll push the boundaries of traditional art-making and develop a sketchbook that’s as unique as your creative voice.
Day 1: Creating Your Sketchbook and Exploring Materials
- Introductions and review examples of innovative and unconventional styles for inspiration.
- Assemble and modify your custom sketchbook using traditional and non-traditional materials such as handmade papers, found objects, recycled pages, and unconventional bindings.
- Tips on balancing aesthetic and functionality while embracing imperfection.
- Experiment with creating backgrounds, layering, and textures using various tools and materials.
- Techniques covered: collage, staining, and mark-making using natural objects, kitchen tools, and fabric.
- Collaborative Materials Hunt: Step outside to gather organic and found elements for your sketchbook.
Day 2: Mixed Media Techniques and Creative Expression
- Work independently or with guidance from the instructors to create and refine pages using your newly learned techniques.
- Learn mixed media approaches, including watercolor washes, layering paint, ink splatter, and stenciling.
- Tips for integrating text, imagery, and themes into your pages.
- Share your work with the group and receive feedback.
- Discuss strategies for continuing your sketchbook practice beyond the class.
