Co-Juried by Donna Seager of Seager Gray Gallery
and Priscilla Otani of Arc Studios & Gallery

POETRY BY SUZ LIPMAN

Continuing our annual show devoted to women artists, O’Hanlon Center for the Arts is committed to bringing more gender equity to the world of art. This 16th year we extended our reach around the globe to artists who identify as female and encouraged them to submit to this popular ONLINE show.

Artist Roundtable Online video

I asked the matriarch for a riddle and she answered in rhyme

Beyond the pull of lassitude lies the entire sea

Within each body, a kind of solace

How easily we slip into the gowns of our pasts

Strength in the armor of our garb

Is it possible to bear witness, even as we are watched?

Beneath the surface, the thrum of domestic jazz

Moments of repose within the maelstrom

Lines serve to tell us we’ve lived

What is the shape of memory?

There’s nowhere to go but forward

Still capable of surprise

A dance with and for our mothers

O’Hanlon Center for the Arts thanks Donna & Priscilla for their time and selections

ABOUT THE JURORS

Donna Seager & Priscilla Otani

Donna Seager is the co-owner and curators of one of the most prestigious galleries on the west coast, Seager Gray Gallery http://www.seagergray.com/. She has juried this show since it started 16 years ago!

A native of New Orleans, Donna Seager began in the art business in 1978. She was the director of Marlborough Gallery in Boston before moving to California in 1989. She continued to work in galleries in the bay area until 2005 when she opened her own gallery. Seager has distinguished herself for her discerning eye and commitment to the arts in her community. She has given lectures on the art of the book at international fairs in Miami and San Francisco. In six years, the gallery became a destination for artists and collectors all over the bay area.

Priscilla Otani is Board President of the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art (NCWCA), founding partner of Arc Studios & Gallery in San Francisco, art curator and interdisciplinary artist.

Founded in 1973, NCWCA has an activist mission in support of women in the arts and its membership includes artists, art historians, curators, gallerists, art educators and students. As Board President, Otani prioritizes the continuation of NCWCA’s successful programs such as the mentorship program, curatorial tours, activist exhibitions, and professional development as well as building collaborative opportunities with Bay Area businesses.

As partner at Arc Studios & Gallery, Otani has focused on showcasing and promoting emerging and established artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since 2010, Arc has exhibited more than 500 mostly local artists, provides studio spaces for 14 local artists, and houses two micro-businesses.

As curator, Otani has produced local, national and international exhibitions through Arc Gallery, NCWCA, National Women’s Caucus for Art, and the Pacific Center for the Book Arts. As juror, Otani has juried exhibitions at Arc Gallery, Chicago Woman Made Gallery, San Francisco Women Artists Gallery, and National Women’s Caucus for Art.  As an interdisciplinary artist, she has participated in many activist-themed exhibitions, ranging in subject matter from immigration, reproductive rights, women’s rights, to politics. Otani received her BA in Psychology and Asian Studies from Mills College in 1974 and MA in Japanese Literature from Columbia University in 1976. Born in Tokyo, Otani is a bi-cultural, naturalized United States citizen.
